The STR has been campaigning to remove content from textbooks that describe evolution, including the discovery of the feathered dinosaur Archaeopteryx as an ancestral bird's ancestor. But this is merely one aspect of the development paradigm's evolution.
What is Evolution?
Evolution is a concept in science that explains the evolution of genetic traits over time. The theory is based on fact that living organisms adapt to their surroundings, which can cause variations in genes or even complete genomes. Over the course of many generations these changes could lead to the emergence new species. Natural selection is the dominant theory of evolution. It describes how individuals with traits that are advantageous survive and reproduce more than those with less advantageous traits. This differential reproduction can be a catalyst to the emergence and evolution of new species.
The term "evolution", which comes from Latin for revealing or unrolling, has been used in many different ways as the concept has developed in both science and elsewhere. Early evolutionists like Erasmus Darwin (Charles’s grandfather) and Jean Baptiste de Lamarck believed that species were predestined to change into another species. The term"transmutation" was coined by the Lamarck's disciple embryologist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, to describe this view. Charles Lyell, who published the second volume of his Principles of Geology in 1833, attacked this idea and borrowed the term "evolution" from Geoffroy's student to describe the view that existing species evolve into different species in a gradual and predictable manner.
More recently, evolutionary biologists have defined evolution as a process that occurs when living things develop characteristics that increase their chances of survival or the ability to reproduce offspring. Over time, genetic variability can cause a population to develop new physical traits or biological functions. Natural selection is the mechanism that triggers the majority of evolutionary changes. Both types of creationism reject that scientific principles such as natural selection and biogenesis can explain how life came to be on Earth. They assert that evolution is inconceivable because it would require miracles. The founders of modern scientific thought shunned miracles in fear that they would lose their credibility.
Some creationists believe in naturalistic evolution as well as special creation, and refer to their belief as "theistic evolution.” This is also referred to as "continuous evolutionism" or the "evolution of created kinds." In this theory, God creates the original species, and then allows them to change over time. These evolutionary changes will eventually produce new species similar to the original.
Some creationists believe that God created all living things and the entire universe in one event called the Great Flood. They believe that the first species were created at the same time, and that they developed gradually afterward. They reject the concept of abiogenesis and claim that self-replicating life cannot arise from nonliving matter.
In general, creationists oppose teaching evolution at schools. Numerous professional organizations, such as the National Science Teachers Association and the Association for Science Teacher Education are in support of this view, as do the American Anthropological Association and the Geological Society of America. Some academic institutions and scientists, however, are more flexible and allow creationism and evolution to be included in their curriculum.
What is Creationism?
When people think of the concept of creationism, they often think of the United States. South Korea also has an anti-evolution group. The publishers of high school textbooks announced last week that they will remove the mention of evolution in their textbooks. The Society for Textbook Revise, an independent body that is an offshoot from the Korea Association for Creation Research (KACCR), has led this effort. The STR has achieved its first victory by removing from textbooks examples of the evolution and ancestor of the avian, the Archeopteryx. Its next target is to remove excerpts from Darwin’s infamous finch-research as well as on human evolution.
STR claims that it has the backing of 4,000 families as well as individual members. Its mission, it states is to cleanse the world of what it calls "atheist materialism" that paints a negative view for students. It also hopes to combat the influence of American Creationists in the nation. A survey of the newest biology teachers revealed that around half do not believe in the concept of evolution. The causes aren't clear, but may include religious beliefs or the absence of full-time creation scientists across the United States.
The KACR accomplished a number of things through its lectures and seminars in the past. It publishes a bimonthly news magazine, Creation, and has published books. The most notable of these is a text on the natural sciences, with a creationist viewpoint, which has sparked interest among college students. In 1991, a professor along with a minister began teaching Creation Science at one university. It is still taught to students today.
On August 6th and 7th of 1993, KACR hosted a second International Symposium on Creation Research. The event was held in conjunction with the opening of the World Expo in Daejeon. Six lecturers from abroad including ICR's John Morris and Steven Austin addressed an audience of several thousand. KACR members and KACR have also presented lectures on creation science in prestigious seminaries. KACR is planning to create a Creation Science Education Center.
